The Old Monk Story
Colonel Ved Mohan, brother of Kapil Mohan, had been inspired by the serene life of Benedictine monks and the drinks they brewed as they led their ascetic life in the mountains where they lived in content — which inspired the naming of the drink.
Old Monk soon surpassed Hercules rum in favour among the Indian armed forces — beginning a relationship with the military that remains part of the brand's identity.
Old Monk is remarkable commercially because it achieved its position with virtually no advertising. In a market where alcohol advertising is banned, the brand grew entirely on word of mouth, military distribution and cultural affection across generations.
The Founding Family
| Person | Contribution |
|---|---|
| Edward Dyer | Moved back to India from England in the late 1840s to set up a brewery at Kasauli in the Himalayas — later incorporated as Dyer Breweries in 1855 |
| Narendra Nath Mohan | Founder of Mohan Meakin |
| Ved Rattan Mohan (d. 1973) | Creator of Old Monk. Took over in 1969 after his father's death. During his tenure the company expanded to add three distilleries and two breweries and added breakfast food and juices, glass manufacturing, vinegars and cold storage. Introduced Solan No. 1 and Golden Eagle. Awarded Padma Shri (1967) and Padma Bhushan (1971) |
| Kapil Mohan (1929–2018) | Chairman and Managing Director; brother of Ved Rattan. A brigadier in the Indian Armed Forces until retirement, recipient of the Vishisht Seva Medal and Padma Shri |
Diversification Beyond Liquor
Under Ved Rattan Mohan's leadership the company added breakfast food and juices, glass manufacturing, vinegars and cold storage — and continues to list glass bottles, wool, conference hall, home décor, tour packages, wine coolers and potassium nitrate among its offerings.
The glass manufacturing operation is strategically significant — a distiller that makes its own bottles has backward integration few competitors possess.
Why Investors Buy Mohan Meakin Unlisted Shares
- Old Monk is a genuinely iconic brand — the third largest selling rum in the world and India's biggest IMFL brand for many years
- 170 years of heritage — Dyer Breweries incorporated 1855; Kasauli Brewery is India's first European-style brewery still in operation
- Lion beer — Asia's first beer brand — extraordinary heritage value
- Brand built without advertising — decades of organic loyalty that competitors cannot buy
- Armed forces relationship — Old Monk surpassed Hercules in favour among the Indian armed forces, a durable distribution and loyalty channel
- Backward integration — in-house glass manufacturing
- Diversified operations — breakfast foods, juices, vinegars, cold storage and glass alongside liquor
- Turnover above ₹500 crore
- Real estate potential — a company operating from Mohan Nagar, Ghaziabad and Kasauli since the 1800s holds land that may be carried far below market value
- Scarcity value — few shares circulate
Risks to Consider — Read Carefully
- Limited public financial disclosure. Request the latest audited financials from Arms Securities before investing — brand affection is not a substitute for numbers.
- Intense competition and market share erosion. The Indian rum and whisky market has been transformed by aggressive competitors (Diageo/USL, Pernod Ricard, Radico Khaitan, Allied Blenders) with far larger marketing and distribution investment. Old Monk's market share has faced sustained pressure from newer brands.
- Extreme regulatory complexity. Alcohol in India is regulated state by state — excise duty, pricing approval, licensing and often distribution are all state-controlled. Price increases typically require state approval, so input cost inflation cannot always be passed through.
- Advertising is effectively banned, limiting brand-building tools — which cuts both ways for a heritage brand.
- Prohibition risk in certain states.
- Input cost volatility — molasses, ENA (extra neutral alcohol), glass and packaging.
- Succession and management questions. Following Kapil Mohan's death in 2018, and with Rocky Mohan no longer associated with the company, leadership continuity is a genuine consideration.
- Modernisation challenge — legacy brands must reach younger consumers who did not grow up with them.
- No IPO announced — OTC-only liquidity.
- High per-share price at ₹2,125–2,325 means substantial minimum tickets.

Who created Old Monk?
Ved Rattan Mohan, son of founder Narendra Nath Mohan, is credited as the creator. Colonel Ved Mohan had been inspired by the serene life of Benedictine monks and the drinks they brewed, which inspired the naming. Ved Rattan took over the company in 1969, expanded it to three distilleries and two breweries, added breakfast food, juices, glass manufacturing, vinegars and cold storage, and introduced Solan No. 1 and Golden Eagle. What is the biggest risk with Mohan Meakin?
Competitive market share erosion. The Indian spirits market has been transformed by aggressive, well-funded competitors, and legacy brands face sustained pressure from newer entrants. Combined with state-by-state regulatory complexity that limits pricing freedom and succession questions following Kapil Mohan's death in 2018, this is a heritage-value investment rather than a growth story.
